Leaving behind past disappointments, the Brazil team is looking forward to a fresh start.
Last year, their lackluster and disorganized performances drew criticism even on home soil. The fans voiced their frustration, and some matches saw significantly lower attendance. However, Dorival Júnior’s squad is now determined to turn the page. As part of their comeback journey, the players are urging supporters to fill the stadiums and rally behind them.
Brazil, a five-time world champion, has been struggling for quite some time. Since their quarter-final exit from the 2022 Qatar World Cup, their performances have shown little improvement. Their Copa América campaign last year ended in disappointment as well, with an early knockout-stage exit.
The 2026 World Cup qualifiers started on a decent note for Brazil, but they soon lost their way. In the last two rounds in November, they failed to secure a win, drawing both matches against Venezuela and Uruguay with identical 1-1 scorelines.
Determined to shake off their failures, Brazil will face Colombia in their first match of the new year. The game is set to take place at Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, kicking off at 6:45 AM Bangladesh time on Friday.
Ahead of the match, the Brazilian Football Confederation shared a video message where the players invited fans to support them from the stands.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker assured the fans that they would strive to achieve their goals together:
“Hello, people of Brasília. I am Alisson Becker, and I’ll be waiting for you at Mané Garrincha as we take on Colombia in this tough challenge ahead. Let’s achieve our goal together—and that goal is victory.”
Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton echoed the same sentiment, emphasizing the importance of fan support:
“Hi, Brazil fans and the people of Brasília. I’m Joelinton, and I’m inviting you all to Mané Garrincha on Thursday (Friday morning Bangladesh time). Your support is crucial for us. I hope we can have a fantastic atmosphere, an exciting match, and secure all three points.”
Matheus Cunha, who has returned to the national team after a long absence, is thrilled about the opportunity. The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, in fine club form, exuded confidence:
“We need you. I’m looking forward to seeing a packed Mané Garrincha. Rest assured, we will give everything we have to make you proud and bring back the glory.”
“Be sure of this—wearing this jersey is an immense honor for us. We will fight with everything we have and put on a spectacular match for everyone.”
With a string of losses and draws, Brazil hasn’t fared well in the qualifiers so far. Out of 12 matches, they have won only five, drawn three, and sit in fifth place with 18 points.
Following the Colombia match, an even tougher test awaits Dorival Júnior’s squad—they will face Argentina on their home turf next Wednesday (Bangladesh time).
