Both Brazil and Argentina are struggling with injury issues, missing several key players. Despite not being at their best against Colombia, Brazil managed to secure a 2-1 victory, bringing relief and confidence to the camp. However, there’s little room for comfort as they now face their arch-rivals Argentina in the highly anticipated “Superclasico.”
Losing first-choice goalkeeper Alisson to injury has put Brazil slightly on the back foot, but his replacement, Weverton, is hopeful of stepping up.
Alisson suffered a head injury in the second half during a collision with Davinson Sanchez in Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Colombia on Friday morning (Bangladesh time). Shortly after the match, it was confirmed that the Liverpool goalkeeper would miss the next game — a significant blow for Brazil.
With Manchester City’s Ederson already out, losing Alisson has left Brazil with a tough challenge in goal ahead of the high-voltage clash. The match will take place on Wednesday morning (Bangladesh time) on Argentine soil.
However, Weverton remains unfazed by the challenge. The Palmeiras goalkeeper is delighted to be back with the national team and is brimming with confidence ahead of the big game. In an interview with CBF TV, he expressed his excitement and optimism.
“I’m very happy to be here and to be part of this team. The atmosphere is always amazing. We had our first training session, which went really well, and we’ve already started preparing for the Argentina game. Hard work and intense training are the best ways to get ready. We still have two more sessions, and by Tuesday, everyone will be fully prepared for an incredible match.”
Weverton also shared his emotions about being back with the national team.
“We Brazilians are always emotional when it comes to the national team; we cheer and celebrate together. I celebrated our win against Colombia. With all due respect to Alisson, I was thrilled to get the call-up on Friday, to wear the national team jersey again, and to be here with everyone. I hope we can return with another victory on Tuesday.”
Brazil’s recent win improved their standing in the World Cup qualifying table, but they still trail Argentina by a significant margin.
The five-time world champions sit third with 21 points from 13 matches, with 6 wins and 3 draws. Ecuador is second with 22 points, while Argentina leads the table with 28 points. A single point in the upcoming match would secure Argentina’s spot in the World Cup.
Injuries have also plagued Argentina, as they will be without captain Lionel Messi, star forward Paulo Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, and several others. Despite this, they secured a win against Uruguay last Saturday, showcasing their depth and resilience.
