Luis Enrique Challenges PSG to Achieve What No Team Has Done in France’s Top League
A historic feat is within reach for PSG, something no team has ever done in France’s top league. And PSG coach Luis Enrique is eager to answer the call. Standing on the brink of another title, the coach stated that his team aims to lift the trophy while staying unbeaten.
PSG is the only team in Europe’s top five leagues that has not lost a single match in their domestic league this season. They could be the first to secure the title, with a draw at home on Saturday enough to clinch the championship with six games to spare. This would mark their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title.
The match will kick off at 9 PM Bangladesh time on Saturday, and in the press conference the day before, Enrique spoke about his team’s ambition to make history.
“Until now, I haven’t focused much on records. But of course, we want to finish the league unbeaten.”
“We don’t just want to be champions; we also want to play attractive football and perform well. We aim to improve our record and statistics.”
With 22 wins and 5 draws in 27 matches, PSG sits at the top with 71 points, 21 points ahead of second-placed Monaco.
Enrique is happy with the team’s overall performance, but he is not fully satisfied. Even with an unbeaten run, the former Barcelona coach believes there are areas for improvement.
“We can always improve. The players can get better individually and as a team. We’re trying to train in a way that reflects in our matches. We’re making some changes in certain areas. It’s a team sport, so reaching the top level in performance is very difficult.”
After winning the French Super Cup in January, PSG is still fighting for two more trophies this season. They’ve already reached the final of the French Cup and have bounced back spectacularly in the Champions League, securing a spot in the quarter-finals. Their first leg of the quarter-finals will be at home against Aston Villa next Wednesday.
Despite being focused on their upcoming match against 14th-placed Angers in Ligue 1, Enrique is also thinking ahead to Aston Villa. He spoke specifically about their coach, Unai Emery, who has previously managed PSG.
“I know Unai Emery well. I know how he analyzes the opponent and assesses his own team’s strengths. He is a top-tier coach. He has proven this at various clubs.”
“We know what kind of opponent we’re facing. Last year, they performed at a very high level. In my opinion, this season, they are a more complete team.”
