Fulham 3 – 2 Liverpool
Arna Slott’s team missed the chance to go 14 points ahead of Arsenal.
After a stunning goal from Alexis Mac Allister gave Liverpool the lead, they seemed to lose their way. Incredibly, within 14 minutes, Fulham struck three times, taking control of the match. Despite a lackluster first half, Liverpool couldn’t avoid the upset and lost 3-2 in Sunday’s Premier League match.
After going behind due to Mac Allister’s goal, Fulham equalized through Ryan Sessegnon’s strike. Then, goals from Alex Iwobi and Rodrigo Muniz gave them the lead. Although Luis Díaz pulled one back in the second half, Liverpool couldn’t avoid their second defeat of the season.
This was Liverpool’s first away loss in almost a year, their last being against Everton on April 24, 2024, when Jürgen Klopp was still the manager.
Despite the loss, Liverpool remains in a strong position in their quest for the title, sitting at the top with 73 points from 31 matches—22 wins and 7 draws. Arsenal, with 11 points fewer, are second.
After weathering some early pressure, Liverpool took the lead in the 14th minute. Mac Allister, receiving a short pass from a teammate, drilled a powerful shot between two defenders to beat the goalkeeper.
However, Liverpool’s joy was short-lived. Fulham quickly responded with three goals in quick succession, putting Liverpool on the back foot.
In the 23rd minute, a cross from Andreas Pereira was mishandled by Curtis Jones, allowing Sessegnon to pounce and score with a powerful shot past the keeper.
The second goal came from a Liverpool mistake. A poor pass in the box led to a loss of possession, and Nigerian forward Iwobi fired a shot that deflected off a defender, wrong-footing the keeper.
In the 37th minute, Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz scored from a corner after Liverpool failed to clear the ball. Muniz expertly redirected the ball with a low shot past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool’s attacking trio was almost invisible in the first half. However, they came alive after the break. Diogo Jota, receiving a pass from Mohamed Salah, was one-on-one with the keeper but couldn’t finish. The Portuguese forward’s shot was blocked by the goalkeeper.
In the 64th minute, Salah missed a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit. He sent a header wide off a cross from Luis Díaz, despite being in front of an open goal.
After several failed attempts, Liverpool finally reduced the gap in the 72nd minute. Díaz, combining with two substitutes, scored a low shot into the net after a pass from Conor Bradley.
With momentum building, Liverpool could have equalized in injury time. However, Federico Chiesa’s weak shot in the box was easily saved, and a minute later, Harvey Elliott also failed to score. As a result, Liverpool walked off the field in frustration after the 3-2 loss.
With this impressive victory, Fulham moved up to 8th place with 48 points from 31 matches.
In another match played at the same time, Chelsea also faced disappointment, drawing 0-0 against Brentford. Chelsea remains 4th with 53 points from 31 matches.
