Inter Milan 2 – 1 Bayern Munich
Despite a late goal from Thomas Müller, Bayern Munich’s hopes of leveling the score lasted only three minutes.
Bayern Munich unleashed a storm of attacks, but it was Inter Milan who did the job. After Lautaro Martínez put them ahead with a stunning goal, Inter Milan managed to hold onto their lead in the second half. Thomas Müller did find an equalizer late on, but it was short-lived. Inter Milan triumphed over Bayern’s previously unbeaten fortress, as Simone Inzaghi’s side claimed a 2-1 victory.
In the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night at the Allianz Arena, Inter Milan defeated Bayern Munich 2-1.
Bayern’s 22-match unbeaten run at home came to an end. Their last loss in the European elite competition was in April 2021, when PSG beat them 3-2 in the first leg of the quarter-finals at home.
From the start of the match, Bayern Munich seemed determined to continue their unstoppable run of 17 wins and 5 draws. Their first attack came in the 7th minute when Michael Olise’s shot narrowly missed the post. A few moments later, Harry Kane’s weak header was comfortably caught by the goalkeeper.
In the 20th minute, Rafael Guerreiro’s bullet shot from outside the box was saved by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Just before that, Olise’s shot was also blocked by Sommer.
Bayern kept the pressure on, registering 4 shots on target out of 7 attempts in the first half.
In the 26th minute, Bayern had a great chance. A ball floated into Olise, who skillfully dribbled past several defenders and passed to a free Kane on the left. The English striker’s angled shot, however, hit the far post.
Inter, under pressure from Bayern’s attacks, launched a counterattack in the 33rd minute. Lautaro Martínez got tangled up in the box and failed to take a shot, but five minutes later, he made up for it with a brilliant goal.
From the right side, Alessandro Bastoni delivered a perfect cross into the box. Marcus Thuram passed the ball back to the running Martínez, who found the net with a precise shot, sending Inter into halftime with the lead.
In the second half, Inter came out more confident. In the 56th minute, Martínez’s shot was saved by Bayern’s backup goalkeeper, Jonas Üwabig, after Manuel Neuer’s injury. Bayern’s frustration increased when Guerreiro’s shot just missed the crossbar in the 65th minute.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made three substitutions in the final 15 minutes. Leroy Sané was replaced by the experienced Thomas Müller, while Sergei Gnabry came on for Guerreiro to strengthen the attack.
Bayern’s desperation to equalize was clear. In the 80th minute, Kane’s shot from outside the box went wide of the post. A few moments later, Müller’s shot was blocked.
Finally, in the 85th minute, Bayern found an equalizer. A cross from Konrad Laimer was lightly tapped into the net by Müller, bringing his total career goals for Bayern to 248.
However, just three minutes later, Bayern’s celebration turned into silence. Karcellon Agustur delivered a perfect cross from the right, and Davide Frattesi scored with a precise shot from close range. Inter Milan held onto this lead, advancing one step closer to the semi-finals.
The return leg will take place on April 16 at Inter’s home ground, San Siro.
