Morgan Rogers is firmly confident that, in front of a packed stadium in the return leg, they have the ability to turn things around.
Rogers had anticipated some challenges going to PSG’s ground, but the intensity of the defeat — despite a strong start — was unexpected for the Aston Villa midfielder. However, it hasn’t shaken his confidence in the slightest. He said confidently, “We have the ability to erase the deficit in the second leg.”
In the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final, PSG came out strong, aiming to overwhelm the opponents with constant attacks. Despite that, Rogers gave the English side the lead in the 35th minute.
However, just two minutes later, PSG equalized through Dijiré Duyé. The Parisians dominated the possession with nearly 75% and took 29 shots, 10 of which were on target. They went on to win 3-1, with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes.
The result clearly gave PSG one foot in the semi-finals, but for Rogers, there’s still plenty to play for. He’s optimistic about their chances, especially with the return leg at home next Tuesday.
“It’s tough to defend and fight off that many attacks. We did that, but in the end, their quality and maybe a few mistakes from us made the difference,” he said.
“Now we just have to keep pushing forward and believe that we can do it… We have the quality to turn the result around. So, it’s not over yet.”
Aston Villa’s home form recently gives Rogers hope. Since their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace in the League Cup last October, PSG has remained unbeaten. This run only adds to Rogers’ belief.
“We’re heading home now, where we tend to find our best form, and this season, we’ve probably played our best football at home,” he added.
