After 24 matches, Hansi Flick’s team tasted defeat for the first time in 2025.
After a dominant victory at home, Barcelona struggled to shine on the road. Despite an unexpected hat-trick from Segu Gigassi, Borussia Dortmund couldn’t overcome the deficit, and Barcelona secured their spot in the Champions League semi-finals.
In the quarter-final return leg on Tuesday night at Dortmund’s ground, Barcelona lost 3-1, but with a 5-3 aggregate lead, they advanced to the final four.
This loss ended Barcelona’s unbeaten streak of 24 matches across all competitions, marking their first defeat of 2025.
While Dortmund had fewer possession stats, they were more clinical, taking 18 shots, 11 of which were on target, compared to Barcelona’s 7 shots with only two on target.
In the first leg, Barcelona won 4-0, but this time Dortmund increased the pressure. Despite three half-chances in the first six minutes, Dortmund failed to capitalize. In the 9th minute, Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Stancy gifted Dortmund a penalty after a needless foul on Pascal Gross inside the box. Gigassi converted the spot kick to give Dortmund the lead.
Barcelona struggled to make an impact in the first half, with Dortmund’s defense proving difficult to breach. In the 39th minute, Barcelona had their first real chance but failed to control the ball inside the box, with defender Jules Kounde mishandling the situation.
In the first half, Barcelona only managed one shot on target, while Dortmund had 10 shots, seven of which were on target.
In the second half, Stancy made an excellent double save to prevent the lead from increasing. After stopping Karim Adeyemi’s shot with his foot, he denied Gross’ follow-up attempt. However, Dortmund doubled their lead in the 49th minute when Gigassi scored again from a header following a Rami assist from a corner.
Just four minutes later, Dortmund suffered an own goal. A cross from Fermín López was miscleared by defender Rami, who inadvertently sent the ball into his own net.
Barcelona was then leading 5-2 on aggregate.
In the 64th minute, López had a good chance but shot wide. In the 73rd minute, Rafinha’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Two minutes later, Gigassi completed his hat-trick. After a mistake from Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo in the box, the Guinean forward capitalized and scored from close range.
In the 77th minute, Julian Brandt scored for Dortmund, but it was ruled offside. The rest of the match saw no significant events.
Barcelona reached their first Champions League semi-final since 2019. They will now face Bayern Munich or Inter Milan in the fight for a spot in the final.
