Bayern Munich’s star striker has been handed a one-match suspension in the Bundesliga.
Harry Kane might miss out on celebrating his first career trophy from the pitch. The Bayern Munich forward will have to sit out their next Bundesliga match — a game that could see the German giants secure the title with a win.
During Bayern’s 3-0 victory over Mainz at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, Kane was shown a yellow card. It came in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half, after he committed a foul that awarded the visitors a free-kick. The English star was booked for holding onto the ball instead of returning it to the opposition.
This was Kane’s fifth yellow card in the league this season, meaning the Bundesliga’s current top scorer will now miss the next match due to suspension.
Bayern are set to face Leipzig next Saturday. If they win, they will claim a record 34th Bundesliga title.
After 31 rounds, Bayern sit at the top of the table with 75 points, earned from 23 wins and 6 draws. Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen are second with 67 points, following 19 wins and 10 draws from the same number of matches.
Since joining Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur last season, Kane has been in incredible goal-scoring form, netting 60 goals in 61 matches across Germany’s top competitions. He is on track to become the first player in Bundesliga history to win the top scorer’s award in his first two seasons.
Last season, Kane scored 36 goals in 32 league matches. This season, he has already scored 24 goals in just 28 matches.
