Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool had been uncertain for a long time, and now that uncertainty has been officially confirmed. The experienced English defender announced he will be leaving Anfield at the end of the current season.
For some time, there have been rumors that Real Madrid was making a strong push to sign the 26-year-old right-back. According to a report from BBC on Monday, those rumors are now becoming a reality.
Alexander-Arnold started his football journey with Liverpool at just six years old. After impressing in the youth teams, he made his first-team debut in 2016 and quickly became a trusted figure in the squad. Now, his incredible chapter at the club is coming to an end.
On Monday, he took to social media to announce his departure from Liverpool.
“After spending 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, it’s time to say that I will be leaving at the end of this season. This has been the hardest decision of my life.”
Both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s contracts were also set to expire this season, and rumors about their potential departures had been growing. However, both players recently signed two-year contract extensions. But Alexander-Arnold has made the decision to move on.
In his time at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold played 352 matches and scored 23 goals. He has won numerous trophies, including a Champions League and two Premier League titles. With the league title secured this season, he’s set to leave on a high note.
Alexander-Arnold has never worn another club’s shirt, which makes it clear how deeply Liverpool is intertwined with his life. That sentiment was evident in his farewell message.
“For 20 years, this club has been my life, my whole world. The support and love I’ve received from everyone, both inside and outside the club, will stay with me forever. I will always be in debt to all of you.”
Liverpool thanked him for everything he has contributed during his long journey with the club and wished him the best for his future.
