According to reports from the Spanish media, Barcelona is set to officially sign Joan García next week.
With both of their main goalkeepers now over the age of 33, Barcelona is looking to strengthen between the posts ahead of the new season. They’ve turned to Espanyol’s promising shot-stopper Joan García.
Talks between Barcelona and García are already complete. Spanish outlet AS reports that the reigning La Liga champions will finalize the deal with the 24-year-old goalkeeper next week.
The report adds that Espanyol has already rejected several offers from Barcelona for García. As a result, the Catalan club is expected to trigger his €25 million buyout clause and sign him on a five-year contract.
It’s also reported that García has agreed to the transfer after being assured of a spot in Barcelona’s starting XI next season.
Earlier last season, when Barça captain and first-choice keeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a long-term injury, the club brought in Polish veteran Wojciech Stęcznzy (correcting the name depending on actual spelling). He surpassed Iñaki Peña in the pecking order and became the preferred choice for the coaching staff despite having come out of retirement.
Stęcznzy’s contract expires this June, though Spanish media suggests he is set to renew.
Under new coach Hansi Flick, Barcelona ended the just-concluded season with three trophies.
