The Super Six spot was secured yesterday, and now the Bangladeshi girls have their sights set on the semifinals. But what does Bangladesh need to do to reach the Under-19 Women’s World Cup semifinals? First, they need to win against India and the West Indies in the Super Six. After that, other equations will come into play.
Bangladesh is placed in Group 1 of the Super Six, which includes five other teams—India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Scotland, and the West Indies. You might wonder, why is Bangladesh only playing against India and the West Indies?
The Super Six’s Group 1 was formed by combining teams from Group ‘A’ and Group ‘D’ of the group stage. Bangladesh was in Group ‘D’ during the group stage, where Australia and Scotland also advanced to the Super Six.
According to the rules, teams from the same group in the group stage do not face each other in the Super Six. Additionally, group stage champions do not play against other group champions, and the same applies to runners-up.
Bangladesh finished second in Group ‘D’ with two wins, making them the runners-up, while Australia topped the group. In Group ‘A,’ India emerged as champions, and Sri Lanka came in second. Hence, Bangladesh will not face Sri Lanka in the Super Six but will play against India. They will also play against the third-placed team from Group ‘A,’ the West Indies.
However, winning these two matches won’t guarantee Bangladesh a spot in the semifinals. Points from the group stage are also considered in the calculations. However, only the points earned against teams that have advanced to the Super Six will be added.
Currently, Bangladesh stands at fourth place in the Super Six with 2 points. India and Australia lead the table as the top two teams, each with victories over two Super Six teams. Sri Lanka is third with 2 points and a net run rate of +0.525, slightly higher than Bangladesh’s +0.425.
