Liton’s poor form isn’t limited to the ongoing ODI series against West Indies; his struggle for runs has been a prolonged issue. In his last seven ODIs, he hasn’t reached double figures even once (though he remained not out in one). In fact, since December 17 of last year, Liton has failed to score more than ten runs in any ODI.
In the first ODI of the series against West Indies, he was dismissed for 2 runs off 7 balls. In the second match, he managed 4 runs off 19 balls. And today, in the third ODI, he couldn’t even open his account. Facing Alzarri Joseph, Liton tried to play a delivery outside off stump but ended up getting out for a duck after just 2 balls.
Before this series, Bangladesh’s last ODI outing was against Afghanistan last month in the UAE, where Liton missed the series due to illness. Prior to that, he played two ODIs against Sri Lanka in March, both in Chattogram. After consecutive ducks in the first two games, he was dropped from the squad for the third match.
Overall, Liton has played five ODIs in 2024 and has been dismissed for a duck in three of them. Among all players this year, Liton is tied for second place in terms of ducks in ODIs. UAE’s Junaid Siddique tops the list with five ducks, though he has batted in 10 innings.
Like Liton, Blessing Muzarabani (Zimbabwe), Avishka Fernando (Sri Lanka), and Michael Levitt (Netherlands) also have three ducks this year. However, each of them has played more innings than Liton (6, 18, and 9 innings, respectively).
Today’s duck in St. Kitts was Liton’s 15th in his ODI career. Among Bangladeshi players, only Tamim Iqbal (19) and Habibul Bashar (18) have more ducks in ODIs. Liton shares the same number with Mohammad Rafique and Mashrafe Mortaza (15 each), but Rafique and Mashrafe were primarily bowlers. In contrast, Tamim (240 matches) and Bashar (105 matches) played significantly more games than Liton.
Among the four Bangladeshi players with at least 15 ducks in ODIs, Liton reached this unenviable milestone the fastest—taking just 93 innings to do so.
