Bangladesh couldn’t quite adapt in their first-ever Super Over, and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz admitted his disappointment — especially over Nurul Hasan Sohan’s dropped catch on the final ball of the main match.
In their long international cricket journey, Bangladesh had never before experienced a Super Over. Miraz felt that the lack of familiarity with such a situation cost them dearly. The team tied a match for the first time in their history — after 814 international games — as both Bangladesh and West Indies finished on 213 runs. In the end, the Caribbean side edged ahead by just one run in the Super Over.
West Indies scored 10 runs in their Super Over. When Bangladesh came to chase, they were off to a good start even before facing a legal delivery — Akeal Hosein began with a wide, followed by a no-ball that added two more runs. With seven needed off six balls, Bangladesh seemed well placed, but despite another wide from Hosein, they couldn’t finish the job.
After the match, Miraz reflected on how new the experience was for his team.
“It was a new experience for us, our first Super Over. Mustafiz bowled really well in the Super Over. We would’ve been happy if we could’ve won.”
“We needed 10 runs (actually 11). One boundary could have changed everything.”
Bangladesh could have even lost during regular play. West Indies needed only five runs in the final over. Miraz handed the ball to part-timer Saif Hassan, who bowled brilliantly, leaving the visitors needing three runs off the last ball. Khary Pierre went for a big shot, and Sohan ran to take the catch — but the ball slipped from his grasp. That allowed two runs, tying the game.
Miraz explained why Saif bowled the final over and expressed regret about the missed catch.
“We didn’t have any other option. We believed that one wicket could win us the game. If that catch had been taken on the last ball, we would have won. Now we’re looking forward to the next match.”
