On the fourth day of the Brisbane Test, tension unexpectedly flared during an exchange of words between the two players.
At the time, the match itself was largely uneventful. In this calm atmosphere, a sudden verbal clash erupted between English pacer Jofra Archer and Steven Smith. However, Australia’s stand-in captain did not want to elaborate on the heated exchange after the match, saying he preferred to leave the matter on the field.
Australia moved 2–0 ahead in the Ashes series with an eight-wicket victory on the fourth day at Brisbane. Chasing a modest target of 65, Smith came in at number four after Marnus Labuschagne fell for 41. Facing Archer’s first delivery, a 146 km/h short ball, Smith drove it for a boundary through square leg. On the next faster delivery, he missed an attempted upper cut.
At that moment, Archer came very close and said, “Why are you playing shots when there’s no chase?” Smith shot back, “When nothing is happening, you bowl fast, champ.”
Archer’s next delivery was another bouncer, and Smith hooked it over keeper Jamie Smith’s head for four. Words were exchanged again. On the following ball, the 36-year-old hammered a six with another hook shot. He then cleared pacer Gus Atkinson for another six in the next over, effectively ending the match. Smith finished unbeaten on 23 from nine balls.
After the match, Smith spoke to former Australian captain Ricky Ponting on Channel 7, reflecting on England’s inability to capitalize on their opportunities.
“Jofra finally got his spirit back, six days into the series, when the second Test ended, he started mouthing off. You’re very late, champ… you’re very late, you had four days of opportunities. You couldn’t do enough. It’s very late now.”
During the 2019 Ashes at Lord’s, Archer had struck Smith on the helmet with a fiery delivery in his debut Test, forcing the Australian batter to miss the remainder of the series due to concussion. Since then, Smith has dominated their head-to-head encounters; even after 33.2 overs of bowling, Archer has yet to dismiss him.
When asked about the Brisbane verbal clash and the history between him and Archer, Smith replied, “What past do I have with him?” Reminded of the helmet incident six years ago at Lord’s, he laughed and added, “He was just bowling at good pace. I’m not really sure what he said, and I don’t remember what I said either. It’s not really your concern either, so we’ll leave it at that.”
