Cameron Green could break Rishabh Pant’s 27 crore IPL auction record this year.
The Australian allrounder has been featuring as an allrounder in this Ashes series, contributing with both bat and ball in the two Tests so far. However, in the IPL auction registration, Green was listed only in the ‘batter’ category, which caused some confusion. Speaking to the media, Green clarified that the mistake was due to his manager.
With the IPL auction just two days away, Green’s statement has added to the excitement surrounding the event. At 26, he is considered one of the biggest attractions this season. While being listed as a ‘batter’ would still make him a hot property, being officially recognized as an allrounder is expected to make the bidding war even fiercer.
Speaking to reporters in Adelaide ahead of Australia’s Ashes preparations on Sunday, Green explained the registration error:
“I am fully prepared to bowl. I’m not sure if my manager will like me saying this, but the issue came from his side. He didn’t mean to list me as a batter. I think it was an accident that the wrong box was ticked. It’s a funny situation, but yes, the mistake was really on his end.”
Indian and Australian media suggest that Green could become the most expensive player in this year’s IPL auction, potentially breaking Rishabh Pant’s 27 crore record. Kolkata Knight Riders are believed to be among the teams most eager to sign him, as they can spend the most money in this mini-auction after finalizing their player retention and release list.
High-price signings are nothing new for Green. In the 2023 IPL auction, Mumbai Indians bought him for 17.5 crore, setting the Australian auction record at the time—even before he had much international experience. Although he didn’t have a standout season, Green performed solidly, scoring 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28, alongside six wickets. That included a 47-ball century.
In the following season, he was traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore from Mumbai. His performance last season was less impressive, scoring 255 runs at an average of 31.87 with a strike rate of 143.25, while taking 10 wickets.
He missed part of the previous season due to a back injury, which is why he was primarily listed as a batter for some time. After recovering, he returned to international cricket in June as a batsman only and resumed bowling last month in the Sheffield Shield. He is now fully fit and bowling regularly.
The IPL auction will be held in Abu Dhabi next Tuesday, with the Ashes Adelaide Test starting the following day. Green said he’s eagerly watching the auction unfold.
“Of course, I’ll be watching along with a few others. It’s always fun to see—it’s a bit like a lottery, seeing which team I’ll go to and who will be on my team. It’s always exciting to watch.”
