As part of preparations for the T20 World Cup, the former fast bowler will work with Sri Lanka on a short-term basis.
Legendary pacer Lasith Malinga has joined Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup. The country’s former T20 World Cup-winning captain has been appointed as a short-term fast bowling consultant.
According to SLC’s statement on Tuesday, Malinga’s tenure began on December 15 and will continue until January 25.
Malinga retired from international cricket in 2020. He is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers of his generation in white-ball cricket, having taken over 500 international wickets. In 2014, Sri Lanka won their only T20 World Cup under his captaincy.
In his career for Sri Lanka, Malinga played 84 T20 internationals and took 107 wickets. He has also been highly successful in the world’s most glamorous franchise league, the IPL, claiming 170 wickets in 122 matches for Mumbai Indians. He now serves as the bowling coach for the five-time IPL champions.
The T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka will begin their campaign on February 8 in Colombo against Ireland. In Group B, their other opponents are Australia, Zimbabwe, and Oman.
Ahead of the World Cup, Sri Lanka will play three T20Is at home against Pakistan starting January 7, followed by three one-day matches and three T20Is against England.
