Mexican club Pachuca isn’t a household name in the football world. However, by Wednesday, it’s likely to be on the radar of many football fans. That’s because Pachuca will face European giants Real Madrid in the final of the Intercontinental Cup.

Despite being miles behind in terms of strength and resources, the Mexican side will give its all to spring a surprise against Real Madrid. The highly anticipated showdown between Real and Pachuca will take place this Wednesday at the Lusail Stadium—the same venue where Argentina and France clashed in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final.

As European champions, Real Madrid secured a direct spot in the Intercontinental Cup final. On the other hand, Pachuca had to fight for its ticket, taking on Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly in a gripping qualifier earlier today. Although Al Ahly entered as favorites, Pachuca emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.

The match, held in Doha, Qatar, remained tied after regulation and extra time, leading to a nail-biting tiebreaker. Pachuca triumphed 6-5 in penalties, clinching not only the Challenger Cup but also a spot in the Intercontinental Cup final.

Before this, Pachuca had faced Brazilian club Botafogo in the second round, an American derby of sorts. They convincingly won that match 3-0, securing their place in the Challenger Cup final, where they once again came out on top.

The Intercontinental Cup is essentially modeled after the previous Club World Cup format. However, with a revamped and much-talked-about Club World Cup set to debut in 2025, this tournament has been given its distinct name, the Intercontinental Cup.
