Horrific!

One look at Gianluigi Donnarumma’s bloodied, battered face, and that’s the first word that comes to mind. Last night, during PSG’s 4-2 victory over Monaco in Ligue 1, the Italian goalkeeper suffered a gruesome injury to his face and had to leave the field. The right side of Donnarumma’s face was severely injured by the spikes of an opponent’s boot.

The shocking incident occurred in the 17th minute of the match at Monaco’s Stade Louis II. Monaco defender Wilfried Singo’s boot struck directly below Donnarumma’s right eye. Donnarumma had successfully blocked Singo’s shot, but as Singo couldn’t stop his momentum, he tried to leap over the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, the underside of his boot hit Donnarumma square in the face, leaving a deep gash on his cheek. It took 10 staples to close the wound and stop the bleeding.

The game was halted for nearly five minutes after the accident. Eventually, Donnarumma left the pitch. Despite committing such a dangerous foul, Singo, who was already on a yellow card, escaped without further punishment.

PSG captain Marquinhos criticized the decision not to penalize Singo, saying, ‘I don’t know if the referee saw the incident properly, but VAR should have intervened. Not showing a red card in such a situation is a major decision.’
