Nottingham Forest 1 – 1 Liverpool

Nottingham Forest raised hopes of another brilliant league victory against Liverpool but fell short in the end.

Four months ago, they stunned Liverpool at Anfield, and this time, starting with the same confidence on their home turf, Nottingham took an early lead. However, Liverpool found new life when Diogo Jota came off the bench and scored just 22 seconds after entering the field. Despite mounting intense pressure, Arne Slot’s team couldn’t find the winning goal.

The Premier League match at the City Ground on Tuesday night ended in a 1-1 draw.

In their first encounter this season last September, Liverpool had suffered a 1-0 loss at Anfield.

After a strong start to the season, Slot’s side seems to have lost their way recently. Across all competitions this year, they have managed just one win from four games, drawing two and losing one. In the league, this was their second consecutive match dropping points.

Still, Liverpool, known as “The Reds,” remain at the top with 47 points from 20 matches, thanks to 14 wins and 5 draws.

Nottingham Forest climbed to second place with 41 points from 21 matches, while Arsenal, with 40 points from 20 matches, dropped to third.

Match Highlights
Nottingham Forest took the lead in the 8th minute with their very first chance. Chris Wood latched onto Anthony Elanga’s through ball in the box and fired a low shot past the far post. The 33-year-old New Zealand forward now has 13 goals this season.

Liverpool dominated possession in the first half with 70% of the ball but couldn’t test the Nottingham goalkeeper even once. They took nine shots during this period, none of which were on target, while Nottingham managed two on-target shots out of three attempts.

For the first 65 minutes, Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target. But in the 66th minute, just 22 seconds after coming on, Jota leveled the score. The Portuguese forward headed in a Kostas Tsimikas corner, who had also come on a minute earlier.

Liverpool almost took the lead two minutes later, but Nottingham goalkeeper Mats Sels denied Jota’s close-range effort. The Belgian shot-stopper also kept out another attempt by Jota in the 77th minute.

In the final moments, Sels produced brilliant saves to deny Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, ensuring Nottingham secured a vital point.

Elsewhere in the League

  1. Chelsea drew 2-2 with Bournemouth, placing them fourth with 37 points from 21 matches.
  2. Manchester City, held to a 2-2 draw by Brentford, now sit sixth with 35 points. Newcastle United, who have played one less game, are fifth on goal difference, also with 35 points.
