Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti believes the upcoming clash against Atlético Madrid will be another tough test.

In La Liga this season, Real Madrid failed to secure a win in both encounters with their city rivals, as both matches ended in 1-1 draws. Now, they will face Atlético once again in the Champions League, hoping to break that streak. However, Ancelotti expects a difficult two-legged battle and isn’t even considering a big win in the first leg to gain an advantage.

The first leg will take place on Tuesday at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, while the return leg will be played next week at Atlético’s Wanda Metropolitano.

When asked if a big victory in the first leg is necessary, Ancelotti dismissed the idea in Monday’s press conference.

“We don’t think so. It’s impossible. The battle will be tough, and everything will be decided in the second leg. Our goal for tomorrow is to play well and gain an advantage. It will be an even and competitive match. We can’t go in thinking about a big lead. Atlético is a strong team.”

Real Madrid secured their spot in the revamped Champions League knockout stage by defeating Manchester City 6-3 on aggregate in the playoffs. However, Ancelotti acknowledges that Atlético Madrid plays a very different style from City. Diego Simeone’s side relies heavily on counter-attacks, whereas City focuses more on possession. Despite this contrast, Ancelotti remains firm in his approach.

“We have to consider the differences between the two opponents. Atlético is much more dangerous on the counter. But I don’t want to change our style or mentality.”
