All doors are now open for Shamit Shome to play for Bangladesh, confirmed Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Vice President Fahad Karim.

Shome had already secured key documents — birth registration, a Bangladeshi passport, and clearance from the Canadian Soccer Association. Now, with approval from FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee, there are no more obstacles for the midfielder to wear the red and green jersey.

Shamit received his birth certificate on April 20 and clearance from Canada Soccer on May 1. Shortly after, the BFF began the process of issuing his Bangladeshi passport, which he received on May 5.

The final step was FIFA’s green light — and that came on Tuesday.

“As soon as Shamit got his passport, we applied to FIFA. Just a short while ago, FIFA responded via email saying there’s no more restriction on him playing for Bangladesh. All clearances have been granted. We hope he’ll play against Singapore on June 10,”
said Fahad Karim.

Shome, 27, grew up in Canada and even played two matches for the Canadian national team in 2020. He currently plays club football with Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League.

With Bangladeshi parents, Shome was always eligible to represent Bangladesh. Inspired by players like Hamza Choudhury — who made his debut for Bangladesh in March — Shome became keen to follow the same path. Now, he stands on the brink of fulfilling that dream.

Bangladesh is set to face Singapore on June 10 in the third round of Asian Cup qualifiers. With all official clearances in place, Shome’s chances of featuring in that match look very strong.

Hamza Choudhury made his debut in Bangladesh’s goalless draw against India on March 25 in the same qualifiers.
