To avoid the risk of injury, the Belgian star might decide to skip the upcoming Club World Cup.
Kevin De Bruyne’s contract with Manchester City is set to expire on June 30. During this period, City will play three matches in the Club World Cup. De Bruyne has openly admitted that he might not take part in those games, saying he’s considering what’s best for himself.
His main concern? The possibility of injury. After spending over a decade at City, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup, the Belgian midfielder doesn’t want to risk ending his time at the club with an injury that could jeopardize his future.
That’s why De Bruyne has little interest in participating in the Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States. Speaking to The Athletic after the FA Cup final, the 33-year-old said he has to look out for his own well-being.
“I think, in a way, I have to take care of myself. Because if I go to the Club World Cup and I get injured, what do I do? No one is going to take care of me then,” he said.
“So, there’s a big chance I won’t play in the Club World Cup. Of course, I don’t know that for sure. I’m just a player. I don’t make the rules. I can’t control the situation. But at the end of the day, as I said, I probably have to look after myself.”
The 32-team Club World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 13.
