Inter Miami’s star is eager to perform well among the world’s best clubs.
Lionel Messi has played in the Club World Cup before, winning the trophy three times with Barcelona. But this time, his expectations are different playing for Inter Miami. Still, the Argentine World Cup-winning captain is excited to compete strongly against the top clubs in the world.
This year’s tournament is also unique because, for the first time, 32 teams will compete. The competition kicks off with Messi’s Inter Miami facing Egypt’s Al Ahly on Sunday at 6 AM Bangladesh time.
In an interview with FIFA ahead of the tournament, the 37-year-old Messi shared his thoughts:
“This is an interesting competition. It’s thrilling to be part of it. My expectations are different compared to when I played for other teams. But I am eager and looking forward to competing well against the best teams.”
This year’s Club World Cup features Europe’s top clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Inter Milan. Compared to these clubs with long, rich histories, Inter Miami made its MLS debut only in 2020. Since Messi joined in 2023, the team has changed significantly, enjoying their first major success last season by winning the Supporters’ Shield.
“I’ve said before, they (the other teams) have the best players in the world. So, this is a great chance to play against them and a wonderful experience for the players on the field and the fans in the stands.”
Inter Miami will miss Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba in the first match, as the 36-year-old Spanish left-back is sidelined with injury. Coach Javier Mascherano hopes to have him back for the second match against Porto on Thursday.
Inter Miami’s other opponent in Group A is Brazil’s Palmeiras.
