Lionel Messi made another key contribution in Inter Miami’s latest victory—and in doing so, reached a rare kind of century.
Once again shining in an Inter Miami shirt, the Argentine magician led his team to victory with another brilliant brace, etching his name deeper into the history books.
In a Major League Soccer (MLS) clash, Inter Miami defeated New England Revolution 2-1.
Messi scored both goals in the first half of the match, which ended early Thursday morning Bangladesh time.
The 38-year-old World Cup winner became the first player in MLS history to score multiple goals in four consecutive matches.
This incredible run began back in May, when Messi netted twice in a 4-2 win against Montreal. He followed it up with another brace in a 5-1 rout of Columbus Crew. Then, after Inter Miami’s early exit from the FIFA Club World Cup, Messi dazzled again with two goals in a 4-1 win over Montreal last Sunday. And he continued that scoring streak against New England.
Interestingly, New England actually led the match in terms of shots and attacking intensity. They took 16 shots, 6 of which were on target. But Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari made five saves to keep them at bay.
Miami, who controlled about 56% of the possession, had 13 shots with just three on target—but Messi converted two of them.
He gave Miami the lead in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. A headed clearance from a New England player fell right into the box, and Messi fired home with a sweet half-volley.
In the 38th minute, the former Barcelona forward doubled the lead with a stunning strike. Chasing a long ball from Sergio Busquets, Messi took one touch and then fired a low left-footed shot from outside the box to beat the keeper.
That goal marked a special milestone for Messi—his 100th goal from outside the box in open play, making him the first player ever to reach that landmark.
So far this MLS season, Messi has scored 14 goals. Across all competitions, his tally stands at 20.
With 10 minutes left in regular time, Carles Gil pulled one back for New England with a brilliant long-range strike, making it 2-1. But the hosts couldn’t find the equalizer.
After 18 matches, Inter Miami now sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with 35 points from 10 wins and 5 draws. They trail leaders FC Cincinnati by 7 points but have played three fewer games due to their Club World Cup commitments.
