Next season, Liverpool players will wear jerseys bearing the inscription “Forever 20.”
Liverpool has announced plans to install a permanent memorial at Anfield in honor of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a road accident.
Throughout the season, the English Premier League champions’ jerseys will feature “Forever 20” as a tribute.
Portuguese forward Jota and his brother Silva lost their lives on July 3 in a car accident in Thomares, Spain. André Silva was also a footballer, playing for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
In memory of Jota, Liverpool has retired the number 20 jersey, meaning no player in the men’s or women’s teams will wear that number again.
The memorial at Anfield will be made by recycling the tributes and items left by fans after Jota’s untimely passing. For the season opener at home against Bournemouth on August 15, Liverpool has planned a fan mosaic and a minute of silence.
Fans will also have a chance to pay tribute during the pre-season match against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on August 4. In two friendly matches in Asia, Liverpool players will wear jerseys with “Diogo J 20” printed on them.
The Premier League club has also announced that if supporters purchase the special “Diogo J 20” jersey, all profits will be donated to the club’s charity, the LFC Foundation. The foundation is committed to running grassroots programs in Jota’s name.
Additionally, Liverpool is in talks with the Football Association to pay tribute to Jota at the Community Shield match at Wembley on August 10.
