Manchester United coach Huben Amury has said it will take more time to strengthen the team from within.
Known for his honest assessments of his squad’s capabilities and potential, Amury prefers to stay grounded rather than chase lofty expectations. Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup match, he made it clear that his team will need more time to become competitive at the European level.
Last season, Manchester United endured a disappointing Premier League campaign, finishing 15th and missing out on qualification for any European tournament. There was still a chance to reach the Champions League, but United lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, closing that door as well.
Once a team regularly competing for Champions League glory, United now finds themselves far from that stage. Amury acknowledged that bridging this gap will not happen overnight.
“I feel we are still not ready for Europe, that’s my view. The Champions League involves tough matches, followed by Premier League battles. Building a team capable of handling all that will take time,” he said.
The new season has not started optimistically for United either. They lost at home to Arsenal in their opening Premier League fixture and managed only a draw away at Fulham despite taking the lead.
Focusing on reality, Amury is putting team-building above immediate European ambitions.
“Players first have to fight for their places. After that, everything can change.”
“Every match is highly competitive. We must strengthen the team internally first. Only then can we move forward and reach a stage where everyone is prepared to compete in Europe.”
