Chelsea 2 – 1 Liverpool
Liverpool’s struggles continued as they tasted the bitterness of a third straight defeat across all competitions.
With the match deep into stoppage time, a draw seemed inevitable. But in the final moments, Estevão Willian struck, sending the ball into the Liverpool net. Stamford Bridge erupted in joy, and Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca sprinted from the dugout to the corner flag to celebrate with his players. His side had pulled off a dramatic victory.
On Saturday at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea earned a 2-1 win in the Premier League. Moisés Caicedo opened the scoring for the Blues before Cody Gakpo equalized in the second half. Then, in the fifth minute of added time, substitute Estevão sealed the win.
For the 18-year-old Brazilian, it was his first-ever goal in English football. Remarkably, his previous strike came against Chelsea itself, when he scored for Palmeiras in the Club World Cup.
Liverpool, who had rattled off seven straight wins before this slump, are now reeling from three consecutive losses. Maresca’s celebrations also brought consequences—he was shown a second yellow card and sent off.
Chelsea, meanwhile, returned to winning ways after two league defeats. With this victory, they climbed to sixth in the table on 11 points from seven matches. Liverpool sit second on 15 points, one behind leaders Arsenal.
