Liverpool’s experienced defender believes the fight to retain the title is far from over, even if the team has fallen behind.
Last season, Liverpool lost just four of 38 matches on their way to the title. This campaign, however, they have already tasted defeat in five of their first 11 games, leaving them trailing in the title race. Defender Andy Robertson acknowledges the tough road ahead but insists it is too early to write off their chances.
Despite spending a club-record £44.6 million in the transfer market, Liverpool have struggled in the new season. A Champions League win over Real Madrid on Tuesday offered hope of a turnaround, but that was followed by a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
With 18 points from 11 games, last season’s champions currently sit eighth in the Premier League standings.
The league is now on an international break, with Liverpool’s next match scheduled for 22 November. Robertson knows the team will face a difficult path upon their return but insists there’s no need for pessimism just yet. In an interview with the club’s website, he said:
“Of course we’ve brought a mountain of challenges upon ourselves. But I don’t think any team will be looking too much at the table before we reach the midpoint of the season. We need to collect points consistently. Then we’ll see where we stand around Christmas or that stage of the season.”
Robertson also revealed that discussions about the trophy have yet to enter the dressing room. At 31, he says the team is focused on taking it one game at a time.
“Wherever we are in the table, I don’t think anyone can talk about the title just yet. Even to be considered, we need to win matches consistently, one after another. In our dressing room, there’s still no talk about the title.”
