However, Ruben Amoury was not surprised by the English midfielder’s performance.
Mason Mount did it all in Manchester United’s dominant win over Wolverhampton Wanderers—helping defensively, setting the rhythm of attacks, and scoring himself. United coach Ruben Amoury heaped praise on the English midfielder for his stellar display.
United won the Premier League match at the opponent’s ground on Monday with a 4-1 scoreline. Mount’s outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
United controlled the game with 64 percent possession, launching a relentless attacking storm. They attempted 25 shots at goal, nine of which were on target.
The Red Devils started aggressively and quickly reaped the rewards. Bruno Fernandes put them ahead in the 25th minute. But in the second minute of added time in the first half, United conceded a goal, briefly raising concerns of another match without a win for Amoury’s side.
The second half, however, showcased an even more dominant United. Their attacks kept the hosts pinned back. In the 51st minute, Bryan Mbuemo’s counterattack restored the lead for the Old Trafford side.
About ten minutes later, Mount doubled the advantage with a brilliant assist from Fernandes. This marked the first time since March that United led by two goals in an away Premier League game. Fernandes later added a second goal from a penalty to seal the victory.
After the match, Amoury was full of praise for Mount. But the 26-year-old’s brilliant display did not come as a surprise to the Portuguese coach.
“He can defend, he can attack, and he’s exceptional on the ball. So this (Mount’s performance) is not something that surprises me,” Amoury said.
“He’s a different kind of leader. Not like Lisandro Martinez. Whatever the situation, Mason Mount is always the same—training hard, communicating… it’s not easy, but he’s a very good player.”
With this win, United climbed to sixth in the points table. They have 25 points from 15 matches with seven wins and four draws. Chelsea is fifth with the same points but a better goal difference.
The top four are Arsenal (33 points), Manchester City (31), Aston Villa (30), and Crystal Palace (26).
