The Portuguese star still wants to play at Old Trafford for many more years.
Bruno Fernandes is one of Manchester United’s most important players and serves as the team’s primary captain. Yet, if the time comes to move on, where would he like to play next? The Portuguese midfielder revealed he has a desire to play in Spain or Italy.
Fernandes’ contract with United runs until the summer of 2027. Last summer, he turned down a tempting offer from Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal to stay with the Red Devils.
As the end of his contract draws closer, speculation about his future is naturally increasing. In an interview with Portuguese TV channel Canal 11, Fernandes shared his thoughts on the matter.
“I have always said that I can stay somewhere as long as everyone there wants me,” Fernandes said. “Whenever I feel that I am no longer 100 percent important, I will speak with the club and let them know that I want to leave.”
For now, however, he still has no such feelings and wants to remain at United for many more years. Yet he has thought about what he would do when the time comes.
“In that case, I would like to play in Spain because I have never played there. I would also like to play for a club in Italy that competes for major trophies. The reason for Italy is that I really enjoyed my time there.”
Fernandes began his senior career in Italy, spending a year at Novara in 2013 before joining Udinese. After a year at Sampdoria, he returned to Portugal to play for Sporting CP.
In January 2020, he joined Manchester United for a £68 million transfer fee.
Since then, the 31-year-old midfielder has played 307 matches for the Red Devils across all competitions, scoring 103 goals and providing 93 assists. He has also won one FA Cup and one League Cup with the club.
