The experienced defender has returned to European club football with hopes of playing for Brazil in the upcoming World Cup.
Just two days after terminating his contract with Fluminense, Thiago Silva chose a new destination. The veteran Brazilian defender has joined Porto.
The Portuguese club announced on Saturday that the 41-year-old Silva has signed a contract until June 2026, with an option to extend it for an additional year, according to media reports.
Former AC Milan, PSG, and Chelsea center-back Thiago ended his stint with Fluminense last Wednesday. ESPN reported at the time that he aimed to return to European football to boost his chances of representing Brazil in the 2026 World Cup.
Silva first stepped into European football in 2004 with Porto after starting his professional career in Brazil. Although he did not feature for the main squad, he played 14 matches for the reserve team.
The following year, he joined Russian club Dynamo Moscow, but due to a tuberculosis infection that required hospitalization, he did not play any matches for the club. In 2006, he returned to Fluminense, which then signed him permanently in 2007.
In 2009, Silva moved to AC Milan, where he won the Serie A title in the 2010-11 season. After three seasons in Italy, he joined PSG, winning numerous trophies including seven league titles over an eight-year period.
In 2020, he signed with Chelsea, winning the Champions League in the 2020-21 season, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
After concluding his four-year spell at Stamford Bridge, Silva returned to Fluminense last year, helping the club reach the semifinals of the Club World Cup in July. Now, he is set to be seen in European football again.
Silva has represented Brazil in the last four World Cups. He has also won the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa America with the national team. However, after Brazil’s quarter-final loss to Croatia in the 2022 World Cup via a tiebreaker, he has not featured for the national team.
In total, Thiago Silva has played 113 matches for Brazil.
