Africa’s premier football competition used to be held every two years.
A major announcement arrived on the eve of the new tournament. From now on, the Africa Cup of Nations will be organized every four years.
Currently, the continent’s top football battle takes place every two years.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) made the surprising announcement on Saturday after an executive committee meeting in Morocco.
The first edition of the Cup of Nations was held in 1957. Organized every two years, this tournament has historically contributed 80 percent of CAF’s revenue.
The next edition in 2027 will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, followed by another edition in 2028. After that, the tournament will shift to a four-year cycle.
Next Sunday, the 35th edition will kick off with the opening match between hosts Morocco and Cameroon.
