Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak both found the net in a dramatic clash at Tottenham, which ended 2-1 in Liverpool’s favor, despite the hosts being reduced to nine men. There were worrying signs for the Reds after Isak had to be substituted immediately following his opener, and Thomas Frank’s side saw both Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero sent off.
The match began cautiously, with neither team committing many players forward, as avoiding defeat seemed the priority. Chances were limited to headers from Virgil van Dijk and Kolo Muani, both easily saved by the goalkeepers. The key moment came in the 33rd minute when Simons received a straight red card, following a VAR review, for a reckless challenge on his Netherlands compatriot van Dijk. Simons lunged for the ball and raked his studs down Liverpool’s captain’s calf. Referee John Brooks initially showed a yellow card, but VAR intervened and upgraded it to red, drawing boos from the home crowd.
Alexander Isak was introduced at half-time for Conor Bradley, who had picked up a knock in the first half. The Sweden international quickly made an impact, opening the scoring after Spurs captain Romero gave the ball away. Florian Wirtz played Isak in, and he fired past Guglielmo Vicario, though he was clattered by Micky van de Ven and needed assistance off the pitch. Liverpool doubled their lead three minutes later when Ekitike soared above Romero to head the ball past a flat-footed Vicario, securing his fifth goal in three Premier League matches.
There were brief signs of a Spurs fightback when Liverpool failed to clear a corner, and substitute Richarlison scored from close range. However, the hosts ended the match with nine men after Romero received a second yellow card for a reckless kick at Ibrahima Konate, capping off a miserable night for the Argentinian.
The victory moves Liverpool up to fifth place, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, only missing out on a Champions League spot due to goal difference.
