His injury is also a concern for the Denmark national team.
Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen has suffered a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), ruling the Danish defender out for an extended period.
Christensen had started for Barcelona for the first time since September in the Round of 32 Copa del Rey match against Guadalajara last Tuesday. He scored the opening goal in the 2-0 victory.
The La Liga champions confirmed in a statement on Sunday that the 29-year-old suffered the unfortunate injury to his left knee during training on Saturday. The club has not specified how long he will be sidelined, but Spanish media reports suggest he could be out for four to five months.
Christensen’s contract with Barcelona runs until next June. Injuries have plagued him over the past two years.
Due to Achilles problems, the center-back managed only six appearances for the Catalan club across all competitions last season. He suffered a muscle injury last October. This season, he has played 17 matches so far.
Since joining Camp Nou from Chelsea on a free transfer in 2022, Christensen has featured in 74 matches across his first two seasons. He played a key role in Barcelona’s La Liga triumph in the 2022–23 season.
His current injury is also worrying for Denmark. He had started in every World Cup qualifying match this year, scoring once and providing two assists. Denmark finished second in their group, securing a spot in the continental playoff.
On March 26, Denmark will face North Macedonia in the playoff semi-final. If they win, they will play either the Czech Republic or the Republic of Ireland in the final for a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Barcelona will face Villarreal on Saturday in what will be their final match of the year in La Liga.
