The Italian coach expressed his gratitude to the club’s supporters and players.
A five-year contract came to an end after just 18 months. Due to a run of inconsistent performances, Enzo Maresca had to step down from his role as Chelsea’s head coach. However, the Italian insists he is leaving with a sense of fulfillment.
After managing only one win in seven Premier League matches, Chelsea announced on the first day of the new year that Maresca was no longer in charge. The club statement did not specify the nature of the separation, though several media outlets reported that Maresca had been “dismissed.”
Chelsea appointed Maresca in June 2024. Under his guidance, the club finished fourth in the Premier League last season, securing a return to the Champions League after two years. They also lifted the Conference League trophy and went on to win an expanded Club World Cup with an impressive run.
But a poor run of form over the past month, combined with growing tension between the coach and the club, meant he could not continue in the role. On Wednesday, Maresca wrote on Instagram that he had given everything during his time in charge to help rebuild the club.
“My journey with Chelsea began in the preliminary round of the Conference League. I am leaving a prestigious club like Chelsea with peace of mind.”
“Over the past 18 months, I want to thank all Chelsea supporters for their backing. That support was crucial in qualifying for the Champions League, winning the Conference League, and lifting the Club World Cup. I am especially grateful to all the players who stood by me throughout this incredible journey.”
On the same day, Chelsea appointed Liam Rosenior as their new head coach on a six-and-a-half-year contract. With eight wins and seven draws from 20 matches, the club currently sits fifth in the Premier League table with 31 points.
