Even after taking 32 shots, Arna Slot’s Liverpool couldn’t return to winning ways.
Liverpool launched relentless attacks throughout the match, with Florian Wirtz’s goal giving them hope. Yet the team squandered numerous easy chances before and after that, and ultimately paid the price. From a dominant position for much of the game, Burnley managed to snatch a point with just a single shot on target.
The Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday ended 1-1. After going behind, Burnley equalized through Marcus Edwards to secure a draw.
Liverpool held possession for over 70% of the match and managed 32 shots, 11 on target. In contrast, Burnley had just seven shots, with only one testing the goalkeeper.
Liverpool, long off the title pace, has now drawn four consecutive league matches. After 22 games, Arna Slot’s side sits fourth with 36 points from 10 wins and six draws.
Earlier in the day, Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-0, sitting fifth with 35 points, while City remains second with 43 points, having played one game fewer than Aston Villa.
From the first whistle, both teams showed attacking intent. In the opening 16 minutes, Liverpool fired four shots while Burnley had three, though none tested the target. The hosts gradually imposed their dominance.
Liverpool’s first shot on target came in the 21st minute when forward Hugo Ekitike’s effort from outside the box was brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper.
Pressure kept mounting, and in the 31st minute, Dutch forward Cody Gakpo was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty. But Dominic Szoboszlai’s spot-kick struck the crossbar, leaving the team frustrated.
Liverpool tried again with long-range efforts from Gakpo and Wirtz, both thwarted by the keeper.
The deadlock finally broke in the 42nd minute. Receiving a cut-back from Curtis Jones from the byline, Wirtz unleashed a powerful shot to put Liverpool ahead. This marked the German midfielder’s third Premier League goal—all coming in the last three games.
In the first half, Liverpool had 15 shots with five on target and continued to press strongly after halftime, repeatedly testing Burnley’s defense.
However, the visitors struck back unexpectedly in the 65th minute. English forward Marcus Edwards slotted a subtle left-footed finish from inside the box to level the score.
The goal seemed to fuel Liverpool’s urgency. They managed to put the ball in the net, only for the offside flag to deny them. Two minutes later, Ekitike had a golden opportunity but couldn’t connect properly from close range.
Even in seven minutes of added time, Liverpool pressed desperately, but their finishing woes proved costly, and they couldn’t secure all three points.
