Liverpool 3-1 Leicester
Liverpool made an impressive comeback after initially conceding a goal at home, dominating Leicester City with a flurry of attacks to strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League table under manager Arna Slot.
In Thursday night’s Premier League match at Anfield, Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory.
After Jordan Ayew put Leicester ahead, Cody Gakpo equalized just before halftime. In the second half, Curtis Jones marked his 100th Premier League appearance with a goal to put Liverpool ahead. Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a late third goal.
Liverpool now have 42 points from 17 matches, with 13 wins and 3 draws, 7 points clear of the second-place team and with one more game in hand.
Liverpool’s dominance over Leicester was evident in the stats as well. They controlled 69% of possession and fired 20 shots, 7 of which were on target. In contrast, Leicester managed only 4 shots, with just one on target.
Leicester stunned Liverpool in the 6th minute with their only shot on target. Ayew finished a perfect pass from the left, sending the ball into the net to give Leicester the lead.
Despite continuous pressure, Liverpool struggled to find the back of the net. In the dying moments of the first half, Salah’s shot hit the crossbar.
However, in added time of the first half, Liverpool equalized. Gakpo received a pass from Alexis Mac Allister, cut past a defender, and scored with a right-footed shot from outside the box.
Liverpool took the lead in the 49th minute. Salah’s pass found Mac Allister in the box, and the Argentine midfielder’s cut-back was met by Curtis Jones, who tapped it in to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead.
Leicester’s goalkeeper kept them in the game with a great save in the 62nd minute to deny Darwin Núñez’s shot, and a little later, he also saved Gakpo’s header.
In the 65th minute, Gakpo thought he had scored with a powerful shot from inside the box, but the linesman flagged him offside. After a lengthy VAR review, the decision was upheld as Núñez was offside in the buildup.
Salah wrapped up the victory in the 82nd minute, scoring a brilliant goal to make it 3-1. After receiving a pass from Gakpo, Salah dribbled into the box from the right, and with a left-footed shot, he sent the ball into the far post, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Salah’s goal was his 16th in 17 matches, making him the current top scorer of the season, three goals ahead of second-place Erling Haaland.
In another match of the day, Chelsea lost 2-1 to Fulham, leaving them in second place with 35 points from 18 matches. Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, are in third place with 34 points from the same number of games.
