Bayern Munich 2 – 3 VfL Bochum
This defeat could be a big blow to Bayern Munich’s confidence ahead of their crucial Champions League Round of 16 second leg.
Bayern started strong against a lower-ranked opponent, with Raphael Guerreiro scoring twice to give them an early lead. However, things took a turn after João Palhinha received a red card, and Bochum took full advantage to pull off a stunning victory.
On Saturday, at the Allianz Arena, Bayern suffered a 3-2 defeat in the Bundesliga. Jakov Medić, Ibrahima Sissoko, and Matúš Bero were the heroes for Bochum, scoring the three goals that sealed the win.
This was Bayern’s first loss in 10 matches across all competitions. Their last defeat came in January, when they lost 3-0 to Feyenoord in the Champions League group stage.
Bayern came into this match full of confidence after a dominant 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League first leg last week. They started the game in style, controlling possession and taking a 2-0 lead through Guerreiro’s goals in the 14th and 28th minutes. At that point, a Bayern victory seemed inevitable.
But Bochum had other plans. In the 31st minute, Croatian defender Medić pulled one back, surprising Bayern. Then came the game-changing moment—in the 42nd minute, João Palhinha received a straight red card for a reckless foul, leaving Bayern with 10 men.
Bochum immediately capitalized on their numerical advantage. Just six minutes into the second half (51′), French midfielder Sissoko scored the equalizer.
Then, in the 71st minute, Slovakian midfielder Bero stunned the Bayern crowd, completing the comeback and securing a memorable victory for Bochum.
Despite this loss, Bayern remains in a strong position to reclaim the Bundesliga title. They have 61 points from 25 matches, leading second-placed Leverkusen by 9 points.
Meanwhile, Bochum, who now have 20 points from 25 games, sit 16th in the league table.
Now, Bayern must recover quickly as they prepare to face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg this Tuesday.
