Just before a special occasion match, Barcelona faces a big setback.
The stage is set for celebrating the La Liga trophy, but Ferran Torres won’t be there for the moment he’s been hoping for. The Barcelona forward has undergone surgery for appendicitis and will miss the important match against Espanyol.
The Catalan club announced the news in a statement on Thursday. No specific return date has been given by the club yet, but Spanish media reports say Torres won’t play in the remaining league matches.
In the last round of La Liga, Torres scored three goals in an exciting 4-3 win over Real Madrid. That victory was a huge step forward for coach Hans Flick’s team in their quest to reclaim the league title.
Barcelona currently tops the table with 82 points from 35 matches, four points ahead of Real Madrid, who have played one more game.
If Barcelona wins Thursday’s match at Espanyol, kicking off at 1:30 AM, they will secure the La Liga title.
