Jadon Sancho is heading back to Manchester United after spending the entire last season on loan at Chelsea. The English left winger reportedly declined to accept a key clause in Chelsea’s contract offer, which ultimately blocked a permanent deal.

As part of the loan agreement, if a permanent transfer failed to go through, Chelsea would have to pay a £5 million penalty for breaking the initial agreement with United. To sign Sancho permanently, the total fee would have been around £25 million.

“Chelsea proposed that Sancho waive a significant portion of his salary — reportedly more than £300,000 per week,” ESPN stated. However, negotiations broke down as an agreement couldn’t be reached on that point.

On Tuesday, the 25-year-old confirmed via social media that he is leaving Stamford Bridge, thanking the club, teammates, and supporters for their support during his time there.

Last season, Sancho made 41 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions, scoring 5 goals and assisting 10. One of his standout moments came in the UEFA Conference League final, where he scored Chelsea’s third goal in a 4–1 win over Real Betis.

While Sancho had previously attracted interest from multiple European clubs, his departure from Chelsea has reignited transfer speculation once again.

Though his loan spell technically runs until June 30, Chelsea have already begun planning for the Club World Cup without him. The club’s opening match in the tournament is set for June 16 against LAFC of the United States.
