Local police have detained five suspects in connection with the incident.
Armed assailants opened fire at the home of Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah in the Mian area of Lower Dir district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to police, the attackers fired several shots at the main gate of the cricketer’s house before quickly fleeing the scene. Local authorities confirmed that five individuals have been taken into custody for questioning.
The attack reportedly took place around 1:45 a.m. on Monday. While no one was injured, several bullet marks were found on the main gate.
At the time of the incident, Naseem Shah was with the Pakistan national team at the team hotel. The 22-year-old pacer is set to play in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi, starting Tuesday. Despite the attack, he has decided to remain with the squad.
Naseem’s younger brothers, 21-year-old Hunain Shah and 19-year-old Ubaid Shah, are also cricketers who have impressed in domestic competitions. It remains unclear whether they were home during the attack.
Following the shooting, police collected CCTV footage from nearby houses for review and have strengthened security around Naseem’s residence and the surrounding area.
A formal case has been filed, and Naseem’s father met with local police officials, who assured him that swift action would be taken.
Police initially believe the attack was not an act of terrorism but may have stemmed from a family or regional dispute. However, Naseem’s father stated that the family has no known enemies, and locals also told Pakistani media that the Shah family is well-respected in the community.
