Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is facing the possibility of missing the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.
After a frustrating previous season, Fofana had made a strong start this year. But unfortunately, luck hasn’t been on his side. After recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament surgery that kept him sidelined for the entire 2023-24 season, Fofana had begun this season with promise. Under the coaching of Enzo Maresca, he played a crucial role in building Chelsea’s solid defense.
Fofana was a regular starter whenever fit, making it into the starting lineup for every match. However, last month, he suffered an injury during a match against Aston Villa, leaving him sidelined. This injury came on top of the absence of another French centre-back, Benoît Badiashile, leading to defensive struggles for the team.
Chelsea, once in great form, now seems to have lost their way, failing to win any of their last three Premier League matches, with two losses in a row. The team will next face Crystal Palace, and Maresca expressed concerns about the defense during a recent press conference.
“Unfortunately, Wesley is out for a long period, and Benoît will be out at least until February. Sadly, Fofana might be out for the rest of the season. We don’t know for sure, but he will miss a significant part of the season,” said Maresca.
The good news for Chelsea, amidst the frustration, is that English defender Reece James has returned to training after recovering from his injury.
Chelsea currently sits in 4th place with 35 points from 19 matches, having won 10 and drawn 5. They are 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have one game in hand.
