Porto’s Argentine midfielder is eager to defeat Inter Miami in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Most players would rather avoid facing Lionel Messi, but Alan Varela sees it differently. For him, going up against the football icon is a special opportunity. The Argentine midfielder is excited for the challenge and can’t wait to play against Messi.
Varela will get his wish at the FIFA Club World Cup in June, where his club Porto is in the same group as Messi’s Inter Miami.
In Group A of the 32-team tournament, Porto and Miami will compete alongside Brazil’s Palmeiras and Egypt’s Al Ahly. The much-anticipated clash between the Portuguese club and the MLS side is set for June 19 in Atlanta.
At 23, Varela has yet to make his debut for Argentina’s national team, meaning he has never shared the field with Messi. Even though they won’t be playing on the same side, the young midfielder is thrilled just to be on the same pitch as the legendary forward.
Speaking to FIFA’s official website, Varela shared his excitement about the matchup. He also made it clear that his goal is to help Porto win and progress further in the tournament.
“Of course, facing him (Messi) is something special. Honestly, Messi is the best player in the world. Hopefully, he won’t be at his best that day. We will give our all to ensure Porto wins the match and continues to win every game we play.”
A key player for Porto, Varela has made 30 appearances across all competitions this season. While the defensive midfielder has yet to score, he has provided three assists.
