For the fourth time in his career, the World Cup-winning star has claimed this prestigious honor.
In his final season at PSG, Kylian Mbappé delivered outstanding performances, and now he has been duly recognized for his brilliance. Once again, the World Cup-winning forward has been named France’s Player of the Year.
On Saturday, Mbappé was announced as the best player for the 2023-24 season. This marks the 25-year-old forward’s second consecutive win and his fourth overall, as awarded by the French magazine France Football.
Since 1959, France Football has been presenting this Player of the Year award. Initially, it was limited to French players competing in France, but in 1996, the criteria expanded to include French players plying their trade abroad.
Previously, the award was based on performances during a calendar year. However, starting in 2023, the rules changed to consider performances across an entire season.
Mbappé had earlier won the award in 2018, 2019, and for the 2022-23 season.
During the 2023-24 season with PSG, Mbappé scored an incredible 52 goals across all competitions. That season, he secured his sixth Ligue 1 title and also tasted success in the French Cup.
In the voting, Arsenal defender William Saliba finished second, while AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan came third. Mbappé’s current Real Madrid teammates Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni took fourth and fifth places, respectively.
After his PSG contract expired last summer, Mbappé joined Real Madrid as a free agent. So far this season, he has scored 12 goals and provided 2 assists in 22 appearances for the Spanish and European champions.
However, Mbappé’s participation in upcoming games remains uncertain. After sustaining a thigh injury in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Atalanta, where Real Madrid secured a 3-2 win, he missed Saturday’s La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano. His involvement in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday is also doubtful.
