Dan Patterson, who hadn’t taken a five-wicket haul in his first five Test matches, opened his account earlier this December against Sri Lanka. Today, in the first innings of the Centurion Test against Pakistan, he achieved another five-wicket haul.
Patterson’s brilliant bowling (5/61), supported by debutant pacer Corbin Bosch’s 4/63, bundled Pakistan out for just 211. In reply, South Africa ended the first day at 82/3, trailing by 129 runs. Temba Bavuma’s side will resume with Aiden Markram unbeaten on 47 and Bavuma on 4.
Patterson claimed key wickets, dismissing Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Kamran Ghulam, and Salman Agha. Most of Pakistan’s top-order batters fell to his sharp deliveries.
Pakistan initially showed promise with a 36-run opening partnership between captain Shan Masood and Saim Ayub. However, the breakthrough came when debutant Bosch dismissed Masood on his very first delivery in international cricket.
From 36/0, Pakistan slipped to 56/4 as Saim (17), Babar (4), and Saud Shakeel (14) departed in quick succession. Returning to the Test side after missing the last two games against England, Babar’s struggles continued—this marks 19 consecutive innings without a fifty for one of Pakistan’s finest batters.
Kamran Ghulam and Mohammad Rizwan steadied the ship briefly, stitching an 81-run partnership. Kamran scored a fighting 54 before his dismissal triggered another collapse. Pakistan lost their last six wickets for just 74 runs, with the final wicket stand contributing 22 runs.
In the final session, Pakistan struck back with three wickets, dismissing Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, and Tristan Stubbs. Khurram Shehzad impressed with two wickets, keeping Pakistan’s hopes alive.
