The Spanish Football Association has restricted Vinícius Júnior’s suspension to La Liga matches, following Real Madrid’s appeal.
Real Madrid’s hopes were dashed as the Brazilian forward will still face punishment. For his aggressive behavior, Vinícius has been handed a two-match ban by the association.
In last Friday’s La Liga match against Valencia, Vinícius received a red card for striking goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski in the face. A day later, head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed hope that the 24-year-old forward might avoid a minimum two-match suspension.
While that hope proved misplaced, the appeal resulted in limiting the suspension to only La Liga games. This means Vinícius will be eligible to play in the upcoming Super Cup match.
Real Madrid will face Mallorca in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on Thursday in Saudi Arabia. The first semi-final will see Barcelona take on Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday.
In the previous edition’s final, Real Madrid crushed Barcelona 4-1 to lift the trophy, with Vinícius scoring a hat-trick in the match.
Currently, Real Madrid sits atop the La Liga table with 43 points from 19 matches.
