Wherever Hamza Choudhury goes—from the airport to his home in Habiganj—he can feel the excitement surrounding him. Thousands have gathered outside his house, welcoming him with flowers, flares, and flags. The moment he set foot in Bangladesh, he became the center of attention in the country’s sports scene.
Is Hamza the biggest sports star in Bangladesh? That’s been a hot topic on social media in recent days, with many comparing him to cricket icon Shakib Al Hasan. As debates rage over who holds more fame, the question eventually reached Hamza himself.
Sitting at his home in Habiganj this evening, Hamza couldn’t help but laugh at the question before responding, “I don’t think I’ve reached that level yet. Shakib Al Hasan is a megastar. He has dominated at the world level for many years. I don’t think… (it’s fair to compare us).”
Some might see his response as mere humility, but Hamza knows exactly how big of a star Shakib is. He has watched him play and understood his legendary status long before arriving in Bangladesh.
Back in 2020, in an interview with Prothom Alo, Hamza had already expressed his admiration for Shakib, saying, “Shakib is a top-class player. He excels in both batting and bowling. He performs in big matches and tough moments. I really like his personality. He is an inspiration for many. Whenever Bangladesh plays, I try to stay updated.”
Hamza grew up in the Leicester City academy and has played for their senior team. Currently on loan at Sheffield United, he is set to make his debut for Bangladesh on March 25 against India.
